This is a circa 1880 antique military officer’s folding wrought iron campaign bed that was purchased in October of 1994 from Le Manor Country French Antiques in Woodbury, Ct. The price was $1750 for the bed and an additional $521 for the custom box spring and mattress which are like new. The bed is 76” long, 36” wide and 44” high on iron casters. The bed is in very good+ condition with what appears to be the original finish. I have included a couple of close up pictures to show the condition.
Military campaign iron beds were portable and used originally by the officers during their on going military campaigns. Up until these collapsible beds were invented, the officers had to sleep on the ground in bed rolls just as the enlisted men did. The soldiers never had the luxury of a bed that elevated them “off” the ground, away from drafts and out of reach from rodents etc. It’s not known whether complaints from officers originally led to beds being carted along on these campaigns or if the practicality of the “campaign” style beds just made it more convenient. I can only imagine the unfortunate foot soldiers that had to carry this heavy iron bed from battle to battle so the high ranking officer had a comfortable bed to sleep on.
