Temple Rubbing History
Ancient Thai temple walls are often covered in stone relief craving of
scenes from the Thai epic myth Ramayana. Pilgrams would rub charcoal
or other material over paper on these walls to made a momento of their journey.

These Temple Rubbings were later made for souvenirs and sold to foreign
tourists. They became very popular allowing local Thai merchants to make money.
However, many temple walls were eventually damaged from being rubbed too much.

It is no longer allowed to make rubbings from most ancient thai temples,
in an effort to preserve historic sites.

My Thai Temple Rubbings are reproductions of antique pieces done on Saa Paper.
The stone reliefs used to make these wonderful posters are new
and not part of any temple.

Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine
An allegory about three Eastern literati who realize by accident that spiritual purity cannot be measured by artificial boundaries. One day the poet Tao Yuanming and the Taoist Lu Xiujing traveled to the Donglin temple on Mt. Lu to visit the Buddhist theologian Huiyuan who lived there as a recluse, vowing never to cross the stone bridge over the Tiger Ravine that marked the boundary of the sanctuary. After an evening together, Huiyuan accompanied his friends as they left the temple. Deeply absorbed in conversation, Huiyuan inadvertently walked with them across the Tiger Ravine bridge. When the men realized what had happened they broke out in spontaneous laughter -- hence the title of the anecdote "Kokei Sanshou" or "Three Laughers of the Tiger Ravine." It is this moment that is usually depicted in paintings. The story probably originated with the late Tang poet Guanxiu. Variations on the theme stress that the three men represent China's three creeds -- Confucianism (Tao Yuanming), Buddhism (Huiyuan), and Taoism (Lu Xiujing) -- and that in the instant they crossed the bridge all were enlightened by realizing that narrow adherence to one philosophy or religion is contrary to true wisdom.

(Dharma means Buddhist Teachings or Law)

Historical Notes
The historical Bodhidharma (known as Daruma in Japan) was an Indian sage who lived sometime in the fifth or sixth century AD. He is the undisputed founder of Zen Buddhism, and credited with Zen's introduction to China during his travels to the Middle Kingdom. (Note: Zen Buddhism is the term used in Japan, but Daruma's philosophy arrived first in China, where it flowered and was called Chan Buddhism. Only centuries later does it bloom in Japan, where it is called Zen).

There are countless legends, some conflicting, about this sage. The best-known legends say he attained enlightenment (Japanese = satori) after meditating in a cave for seven years (some say nine years) without blinking or moving his eyes. In most legends, this occurred while Bodhidharma was facing a cave wall at the Shorinji Temple on Mt Song in China.

During those years of meditation, his arms and legs atrophied, shriveled up, and fell off. Legend also credits Bodhidharma with cutting off his eyelids. Apparently he dozed off during meditation, and in anger, he cut off his eyelids, which fell to the ground and sprouted into China's first green tea plants.

Walnut & Pine Rough Lumber (Hockessin, DE 19707) $5

This is a lot of black walnut, eastern white pine (not to be confused with the western species), and perhaps some white oak rough sawn lumber. This lumber was cut many years ago and air-dryed down to its present 10%. The lumber is high quality and in good widths. Some of the eastern white pine boards are wider than 20 inches. Thickness is 4/4, some 5/4 and some 8/4. Lengths are mostly 10 feet and 14 feet with some shorter boards you can see on the top.

We are selling this lumber as a lot for $5 per board foot. We guess that there are 300-400 board feet but we are not at all sure until we start measuring it.

This was not a staged shot nor was there any intent to create anything artistic- it was simply an attempt to editorialize the rather pathetic state of this pair of shoes. However, upon processing back in the U.S. when admiring the amazing detail and vibrant colors of the chair and carpet upon which the shoes sit, we realized that we had captured something special. �All-Stars� is limited to 100 printings.

I have many skeins of yarn that I bought for knitting. I no longer have time to knit, however, I still have somewhere between 50 and 75 skeins of yarn. Some have been opened and spun into balls for easier knitting, as we all know how much of a pain it is to have your yarn tangle. These opened skeins are $1 each. The unopened skeins are $2.
